EMBO, Europe’s life science academy, has the following offer to associations and unions representing journalists and science journalists, and to universities and academies offering science journalism courses or training.
The Maria Leptin | EMBO Science Journalism Fellowships are now open for applications:
- For life scientists wishing to transition to a career as a science journalist, the programme supports internships at media organizations of between three and a maximum of 12 months.
- For science journalists wishing to further their knowledge and reporting of the life sciences, the programme supports placements in a life sciences research institute for up to three months.
The fellowships are only available for editorially independent science journalism activity. Applicants must be resident in one of the 31 EMBC member states and placements must be in an EMBC member state.
For the full EMBC list of countries visit embc[dot]embo[dot]org
Successful applicants receive a daily stipend paid in advance which is intended to cover living expenses as well as travel and labour costs. The fellowship can be combined with other grants or income from freelance work. It is not possible to extend the fellowship period. Fellows are responsible for their own social security contributions and tax and other costs incurred.
The programme has three selection rounds per year with closing dates of 1 February, 1 June and 1 October. Assessment of applications is by an independent advisory board.
The fellowships were made possible by a private donation from Maria Leptin.
Further information, including how to apply, full conditions and daily stipend rates, is available under the funding tab at embo[dot]org
